My favorite lighthouse is on the beautiful shore of North Carolina, at least it was. Cape Hatteras is the tallest lighthouse in America, and it had to be moved inland due to eroding of the shore caused by the waves. The ensuing project was among the most difficult structure moving in history. Imagine the logistics of moving a 200 foot tall slender building, through the sand no less? When you think about relocating a lighthouse, corporate relocation seems easy.

The final stop on my trip through North Carolina and Tennessee ended at the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I have always had a fascination with lighthouses, so the Outer Banks was an absolute must on the trip. Some of the oldest functioning lighthouses, in all their glory, still stand on guard on the Outer Banks. I remember a few years ago they moved legendary Cape Hatteras lighthouse a few miles inland as waves were eroding the islands.
I recently visited the Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina. The estate is the largest private home in the United States! One could spend hours touring the many rooms. Everything in the house, for the most part, is original. The Vanderbilts were an extremely rich family, and they didn’t cut any corners when it came to their estate. Even the recliner was made of high quality material that was still beautiful after a hundred years. It it really worth a trip to see early examples of big spenders in America.
The Doctor, Jan Adams, who performed plastic surgery on Kanye West’s mother walked off the Larry King show abruptly, explaining he was asked by the West family to not go on. He said he would never answer questions as long as the family wasn’t comfortable. Larry King said it was one of the craziest things he had ever seen on his show in it’s many years, and probably one of the more interesting. He stayed around long enough to say a few lines, then shook Larry’s hand and removed his earpiece. Investigators are looking into whether Dr. Adams actions cost Kanye’s mom her life, and it has also stirred debate about the safety of plastic surgery.
November 13, 2007 is a day to mark on your calendar. It’s National Memory Screening Day, a day to raise awareness about early detection of Alzheimer’s Disease and related illnesses. By attending one of these free screenings, you can detect the onset of Alzheimer’s, meaning a much happier prognosis. Early detection is key in a disease like Alzheimer’s, the earlier it’s detected, the better the treatment. Better treatment means alleviating symptoms and making the overall quality of life better.
If you are older or you have noticed problems with your memory, it may be time to take advantage of a free memory screening near you. In order to find the closest location to go and get yourself tested confidentially, simply consult the website at NationalMemoryScreening.org. You will find places in your area offering the memory screen. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. If you do have Alzheimer’s or another disease like it, treatment can help you fight off the debilitating symptoms as long as possible, allowing you to live a full and complete life.
You can also find “successful aging tips” on that website to help you or a loved one through later years. A cure for Alzheimer’s would be a blessing, and work is being done to find it, but until then the primary concern should be with patients that are currently suffering from its wrath. Management and care of the disease is the concern of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, and donations are always welcome.
Alzheimer’s Disease can be a devastating illness, but with early detection and treatment, you can stave off it’s effects for as long as possible while enjoying a fairly normal life. This is the goal of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
Political correctness is running amok in the lives of celebrities and everyone else. Don Imus is out of a job. Now, you can possibly add Duane “Dog” Chapman of Dog the Bounty Hunter to that list. His network suspended new episodes of his bounty hunting program after the esteemed National Enquirer got a hold of a conversation he had where he used the “N” word many times. Oh well. At least it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving person.
