During an acting career as diverse as Johnny Depp’s, it is hard to pick out just two unforgettable moments that define his career. I think some of the best characteristics of Johnny are his flexibility in roles and dedication to getting it right. He is the kind of person that takes his job seriously and conducts a lot of research for a part. The moviegoer with an appreciation for subtle nuances and details all love the acting of Johnny Depp.
That being said, my favorite role of his came in the cult classic Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, where he portrayed Raoul Duke, a journalist with a knack for introspection and reckless drug use on his search for the American Dream. The acting talent of Depp is on full display when he checks into the hotel, high on LSD. The drug begins to take effect on him as he goes up to the hotel desk and he is left standing there to embarrass himself while sweaty and incomprehensible. “I realize his name is not on that list, but we must have a suite!”
Another of my favorite Depp moments came in the movie Blow where he portrayed major cocaine dealer George Jung. It really speaks to Depp’s character as to how he can make a drug addicted journalist and cocaine dealer lovable. In Blow, we deal with a character who is getting rich off of cocaine, but we still feel bad for him. In the end, everything turns on George as he tries to straighten his life out. No matter the role, Johnny can nail it.
I guess my favorite moment would have to be from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Throughout the whole movie, his depiction of Raoul Duke makes you laugh, shake your head, and empathize all at the same time. This is why I am excited about his latest role in Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd. Those who are familiar with the work of Tim Burton will not be disappointed, and those who aren’t familiar with his or Johnny’s work may find this a good film to get started. If you haven’t seen the previews, you can always visit the official Sweeney Todd movie site or visit Sweeney Todd on MySpace!

Up until recently, the only news out of Hollywood was a grim picture painted of the future of US cinema. Movie sales looked to be getting hurt by pirate DVDs and other factors, namely being the movies were lousy. Now, after a summer of basking in the sun, Hollywood is enjoying a resurgence. A bunch of movies this summer performed better than expected. Comedies like “Superbad” entertain ed hot audiences to a bunch of laughter all around the country. Recently, the new adaption of the thriller “Halloween” captivated audiences and remains on the top of movie lists.
Owen Wilson sure has been creating a lot of drama around Hollywood recently, and it isn’t because of his acting. After a failed suicide attempt, the 38 year old comedian has shut down his comedy tours and movie projects. Anyone waiting on the edge of their seats for the next Owen Wilson comedy will surely be disappointed. Also, the four of you who had tickets to see him in concert will be refunded via mail. In all seriousness, we hope Owen Wilson seizes his demons and drops from the comedy game for good before we have to endure another movie with Jackie Chan.
If you are looking for a good family movie here in late 2007, you are sure to love the dolphin movie called “Eye of the Dolphin” which is coming out on August 24th. It is written by three time Emmy winner Wendell Morris, who adds his special touch to a movie featuring a generation-spanning tale of love, spirituality, and redemption. Dolphins and people have always enjoyed special relationships as they are so intelligent, and it is never more evident than in this film. Here is the theatrical trailer:
“Gracie” star Carly Schroeder portrays a troubled 15 year old girl from Los Angeles that goes to live with her busy father in the Bahamas who is a dolphin researcher. During this time, she develops a strong bond with another lonely soul - an orphaned dolphin. Together, they go out to help the impoverished people of the area. If you want to see a heart-warming family tale that spans generations, you are sure to love “Eye of the Dolphin” which opens on August 24th. Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy has always been a big Batman buff, and now he has landed a movie role to prove it. It’s not the first time for the Democrat, who will only reveal he is a “distinguished gentleman” in the latest Batman movie called “The Dark Knight.” He has prior experience writing in Batman books and other bit roles. He is going to donate his pay to his childhood library in Montpelier.
There are plenty of sequels and threequels out right now on the big screen. It is no wonder it’s so easy to skip one of them, and critics agree on which one to leave out: Rush Hour 3. After the first two action comedies featuring Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan, the humor is flat and downright boring here. How many times will audiences be made to suffer through another “do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?” gag. The answer is two, because no one should be fooled into seeing this lackluster summer snooze-fest.
It’s getting near October once again, which can only mean a new batch of scary movies is set to hit the big screens all across America. If you are like me, you have a soft spot in your heart for the classic scary movies such as Halloween the movie. Even though the film was released in 1978, it was still a frightening, if not horrific experience. Michael Myers and Jamie Lee Curtis became icons of American pop culture for years after the film.
Imagine how excited I was when I heard they were redoing Halloween the movie? It is set to be directed by none other than Rob Zombie, rock musician who has also directed scary movies like House of 1000 Corpses. Since I was a kid I have been listening to Rob Zombie’s metal, now I get to see his works play out on the big screen. I’m sure he will bring an exciting new vibe to the franchise. I think we can expect bigger production and execution in the latest Halloween installment with Rob Zombie at the helm.
Don’t take my word for it, take a look at the frightening trailer that is on YouTube right now. When you hear that classic little riff from the Halloween movies, it will send a chill up your spine. All the excitement of the original movie release will be alive in well in the hands of Rob Zombie. If this clip doesn’t get you in the mood for scary movies, nothing will.
If you are like me, you’ll be among the first in line to see this exciting new picture when it hits big screens nationwide on August 31st.
Fans of the TV series “Underdog” that ran in the mid-sixties may be a little skeptical of the latest release by Disney Pictures, but it still delivers some fun moments. Critics aren’t going to give the new film adaption of Underdog a Best in Show prize, but it can still entertain young fans. This is the trend for Disney pictures nowadays, taking a tired idea of the past and trying to revamp it for modern audiences. Some characters like Underdog simply age terribly and can no longer captivate an audience. This is the case for this old dog, who is one step away from getting put to sleep.
